Student Voice in Action: Utilizing the Holistic Student Assessment to Strengthen SEL Climate and Culture.

Presenters:

  • Nicole Kfoury: Manager of Networks and Business Development at PEAR

  • Jane Aibel : Chief Executive Officer at PEAR

  • Francoise Niyigena: Teaching Fellow at The Epiphany School

PEAR's Holistic Student Assessment (HSA) is a data-driven tool to promote social-emotional development in all young people. The self-report tool provides teachers, program staff and administrators with a social-emotional “portrait” of the unique strengths and challenges of each young person. The HSA is based on answers that young people provide about themselves, and valuable information from the tool encourages differentiated teaching and support strategies. The HSA is based on PEAR's Clover Model, which describes child and adolescent development as a holistic interaction between four core developmental needs: Active Engagement (engaging the world physically), Assertiveness (expressing voice and choice), Belonging (social connection and relationships) and Reflection (thought and meaning-making). The Epiphany School has used the HSA since 2018 to help identify where students struggle the most, center student voices in how they are supported as well as track student progress annually. In this presentation, you will hear more about the assessment, its impact at the Epiphany School and how you could also use it at your school to enhance your student support initiatives.

Creating Thinking Classrooms

Presenters: Aiyana Smith and Elaine Garcia, Math Teachers at Imago Dei Middle School

Even before the pandemic, students struggled to use grit and perseverance to solve problems. Our students need a space free of judgment and unhealthy competition to leap into solving problems. This workshop will dive deep into the practices of number talks and gallery walks and effectively use non-permanent, vertical spaces to increase student engagement and learning. Bring an open mind and your thinking caps as we develop a classroom of students that think for themselves.
