For five days this summer, a group of San Miguel Providence graduates, all current high-schoolers, participated in a service trip to Homestead, Florida, where they volunteered at the Little School, a new Lasallian school that serves more than 20 local migrant families. Three San Miguel staff members accompanied our young men. The second annual service trip to Homestead was funded by a generous donor.

The six San Miguel graduates assisted with the school’s summer camp and created afternoon lessons and workshops for the children, taking as their theme “Around the World in 80 Days.” Their plans included making country flags, playing bingo de futbol, and leading a soccer elimination game called Four Corners, all while serving as good role models for the children. After the week of activities, the San Miguel alumni reflected on the joys and challenges of teaching, having gained a new perspective on their own educational journeys.

The graduates lived in community, doing chores and preparing their meals each evening, fully immersing in the week of service. One highlight of the trip came when they joined three Christian Brothers at the Homestead Brothers’ community for dinner and an evening of stories.

Service and social justice are core principles of a Lasallian education. This trip, the second such collaboration between San Miguel Providence and the La Salle Educational Center in Homestead, Florida, allowed these graduates the opportunity to show their faith in action.
